Power Planning — The Step That Gets Skipped
Automated gate operators require power. Before posts go in:
- Identify nearest power source and calculate conduit run distance
- Determine conduit path — under driveway, along fence line, or direct bury
- Rough in all conduit before posts are set and before any driveway material is compacted
- Coordinate with homeowner on outlet placement and any needed electrical panel work

Can a gate operator be added to an existing gate?
Yes — if the existing gate posts are sized correctly and the gate is structurally sound. A walk gate post built with a 4×4 cannot support the moment load of a motorized operator without retrofitting the post. We assess the existing structure at the estimate before quoting a retrofit.
Does Michigan require a permit for an automated gate?
Most West Michigan municipalities require a fence permit for any gate that is part of a fenced enclosure, and many also require an electrical permit for hardwired operators. We pull every applicable permit on every job.
Do automated pool gates comply with Michigan pool code?
Yes — when installed correctly. Michigan Residential Code R326 requires pool barrier gates to be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch at 54 inches or higher. An automated operator provides the closing force, but a mechanical latch at code height is still required.
