Fence Contractor Serving Kentwood, Grand Rapids & West Michigan
Fence Brothers is a fence contractor based in Kentwood, MI, serving homeowners and businesses across Grand Rapids and West Michigan. We install wood, vinyl, aluminum, and commercial fencing built to withstand Michigan’s climate and soil conditions.
WHERE WE WORK
We Cover All of West Michigan. Here’s How We Work Each Area.
We run out of Kentwood, at 4477 E Paris Ave. From there, we travel east toward Ada, south to Byron Center and Caledonia, southwest through Grandville and Wyoming, north up to Rockford, and west out to Holland. Below is every area we serve.
Kentwood & Home Base
This is home. Our shop is at 4477 E Paris Ave SE in Kentwood, off the East Paris corridor between 44th and 52nd Street. That puts us minutes from Kelloggsville to the south and East Kentwood to the east. We know the permit office, the setback rules, and which Miss Dig callouts need extra coordination. Most projects here are replacements of established lots. Fastest availability in our entire service area.
Grand Rapids & East Grand Rapids
The largest market in the region. City of Grand Rapids permits are handled by a separate office from the townships. We work throughout the city — Garfield Park, Creston, West Grand, Godwin Heights, Northview, and the southeast side closest to our Kentwood base. East Grand Rapids is its own incorporated city with its own permit office and inspectors. We know both processes well.
Grand Rapids
Residential and commercial work citywide. Older lots, established neighborhoods, and a steady stream of fence replacements.
East Grand Rapids
Its own city, its own permits. Established lots near Reeds Lake where curb appeal and property line accuracy matter.
Ada, Cascade & Forest Hills
We head east on Fulton Street to reach this corridor. Properties tend to be larger with wooded lots and longer fence lines. Custom cedar is common, and HOA requirements are frequent in Cascade and Forest Hills.
Ada
Larger lots along the Thornapple River. Custom wood and matching driveway gates are the most common requests.
Cascade
Wooded lots with grade changes along the Cascade Road corridor. HOA requirements are common. Site-specific planning on every project.
Forest Hills
Residential neighborhoods along Fulton Street east of East Grand Rapids. HOA specs and curb appeal drive most project decisions here.
Caledonia, Byron Center, Lowell & Alto
Some of the fastest-growing service areas in and around south and southeast Kent County. We handle first installs in new subdivisions along M-37 through Gaines Township, work along US-131 through Byron Township, and larger rural or acreage projects farther east around Lowell. Alto sits further south on M-37, and Middleville is further still into Barry County—we travel both for the right projects.
Caledonia
Growing fast along M-37. First installs on new lots are the most common project type here.
Byron Center
Along US-131 south of Grand Rapids. Larger lots, newer homes, and strong gate operator demand.
Lowell
A larger service area east of the metro along M-21 and the Grand River. Mix of in-town neighborhoods, larger rural lots, and acreage properties.
Alto
Rural community south of Caledonia on M-37. Acreage lots and agricultural fencing alongside residential work.
Grandville & the Southwest Corridor
The corridor along I-196 and Chicago Drive is one of our busiest for commercial fencing: industrial properties, retail sites, and condominium communities between Wyoming and Grandville. The area just south and west of our Kentwood shop is also seeing heavy new development right now. Jenison and Hudsonville bring us into Ottawa County, which we handle the same as the Kent County side.
Grandville
Active commercial and residential market along I-196. New development south and west of our shop is growing fast.
Wyoming
Second largest city in Kent County. Dense residential and strong commercial demand along Chicago Drive.
Jenison
Ottawa County suburb with high homeowner density. Residential fence demand across a mix of older and newer subdivisions.
Walker, Rockford & North Kent
We head north from Kentwood on US-131, Alpine, and West River Drive to reach Walker, Comstock Park, Belmont, and Rockford. This corridor includes dense suburban neighborhoods, commercial properties, and more rural lots as you move farther north toward Cedar Springs and Sparta.
Rockford
North Kent anchor. Residential and light commercial work along the Rogue River corridor.
Comstock Park
Along West River Drive between Grand Rapids and Rockford. Mix of older lots and newer infill.
Belmont
Plainfield Township, just north of Comstock Park on US-131. Residential neighborhoods and rural lots along the West River Drive corridor.
Cedar Springs
Further north on US-131. We travel here for the right projects. Call ahead for scheduling.
Sparta
Northwest Kent County off US-131. Rural and semi-rural lots. We travel here for the right jobs — call ahead for timing.
Walker
Northwest of Grand Rapids along I-96 and Alpine. Strong residential demand with commercial properties near major retail corridors.
Holland & Ottawa County
About 30 miles west on US-31, across the Ottawa County line. Its own permitting process, its own inspectors. Zeeland sits just east of Holland — same Ottawa County permit jurisdiction. Holland Township surrounds the city to the west and north. We travel out here for the right projects and know how the Ottawa County side works. Call us for a straight answer on timing.
Holland
Ottawa County has its own permit office. Residential and light commercial work. Holland Township surrounds the city to the west and north — same county jurisdiction.
Zeeland
Its own incorporated city just east of Holland. Same Ottawa County permit requirements. Growing residential area with steady fence demand.
Grand Haven, Muskegon & Lakeshore North
The western edge of our service area follows the US-31 lakeshore corridor from Grand Haven and Spring Lake north toward Muskegon. Allendale and Coopersville bring us farther inland along I-96. Ottawa County permits apply throughout much of this corridor, while Muskegon projects may involve separate local requirements. We travel here for the right projects—call ahead for scheduling and timeline.
Grand Haven
Ottawa County lakeshore city on US-31. Residential and light commercial work. West Olive and Robinson Township fall within this corridor.
Spring Lake
Just east of Grand Haven along the Spring Lake channel. A mix of waterfront and residential properties. Same Ottawa County permit process.
Allendale
Ottawa County township along I-96 between Grand Rapids and Grand Haven. Growing residential area with new development along the corridor.
Coopersville
Incorporated city in northwest Ottawa County. Rural and residential lots.

WHO WE ARE
A Family Business. Kentwood Built. Here Since 2013.
Fence Brothers was founded by two brothers from Kentwood. Our family has been in the lumber industry for 34 years. That background shows up in how we select materials and how our fences hold up over time.
Kyle runs field operations. Alec handles the business side. When you call, you’re talking to the people who will be on your property. We’re not a franchise. Not a lead aggregator. Just a West Michigan fence company that takes the work seriously.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common Questions About Our Fencing Services, Pricing, and Process.
How deep do fence posts need to be in West Michigan?
In West Michigan, fence posts should be set below the frost line, typically 42–48 inches deep, to prevent heaving during winter freeze-thaw cycles. Shallow posts are the main reason fences lean after a few seasons. Proper installation also includes compacted backfill or concrete depending on soil type, especially in clay-heavy areas common around Grand Rapids and Kentwood.
Do I need a permit to install a fence in Kent, Ottawa, or Muskegon County?
Most cities and townships in Kent and Ottawa County require a fence permit, especially in Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Wyoming, and Holland. Requirements usually cover height limits, setback distances from property lines, and visibility rules near intersections. A professional installer typically submits the permit application and verifies zoning requirements before installation begins.
What type of wood fence lasts longest in Michigan weather?
Western red cedar and white cedar fences perform best in Michigan’s wet springs and freeze-thaw winters because they naturally resist rot and insects. Pressure-treated pine is sometimes used for structural rails and posts, but cedar is preferred for pickets and visible boards. Proper post depth, drainage, and air spacing between boards also significantly extend fence life.
How do property lines affect fence installation?
Fence placement should always follow the actual surveyed property line, not just the location of an existing fence. Many older fences in Grand Rapids neighborhoods were installed decades ago and may drift onto neighboring property. Professional installers typically recommend confirming boundaries through a survey or monument markers before setting posts to avoid disputes.
How long does fence installation usually take in West Michigan?
Most residential fence installations in the Grand Rapids area take one to three days once permits and utility locates are complete. Project timing depends on yard size, terrain, and material type. Winter frost, spring ground saturation, and Miss Dig utility marking schedules can also affect the start date before installation begins.
