BUILT FOR MICHIGAN’S CLIMATE
Why Post Depth Matters as Much as the Material You Choose
West Michigan weather can be hard on fences. Seasonal moisture, shifting soil, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles can all put stress on posts over time. That’s why proper installation matters just as much as the material itself.
The material you choose matters. The build behind it matters just as much.
Wood, vinyl, and aluminum can all perform well in this climate when installed for the site and soil conditions.
Cedar resists moisture and rot naturally.
Quality vinyl handles freeze-thaw cycles without cracking.
Powder-coated aluminum doesn’t rust through West Michigan’s wet springs or salt-heavy winters.
The right choice comes down to your lot, your budget, and how much maintenance you want long term.

WHO WE SERVE
Fencing for Residential and Commercial Properties:
Wood, Vinyl, Aluminum & More
We install fences for homeowners and businesses. Most local fence builders specialize in one. We do both.
For your home
Wood privacy fences, vinyl, aluminum, driveway gates, repair/restoration, and custom builds. Cedar is our primary material. We work across the full range of residential styles and lot types — new construction subdivisions in Byron Center and Caledonia, established lots in Ada and East Grand Rapids, everything in between.
For your property or business
Chain link, aluminum, temporary fencing, bollards, and gate operators for commercial properties, job sites, and institutions. We’re one of the few contractors in West Michigan installing gate operators.

WHERE WE WORK
Proudly Serving Kentwood, Grand Rapids & the Greater West Michigan Area
Our shop is at 4477 E Paris Ave SE in Kentwood. From there, we serve homeowners across Grand Rapids, Ada, Forest Hills, Byron Center, Caledonia, Grandville, Wyoming, Rockford, Holland, and surrounding West Michigan communities.
Each property comes with different site conditions, neighborhood layouts, and local requirements. Newer subdivisions may have HOA guidelines and tighter lot lines, while established neighborhoods often involve older property lines, mature trees, or existing fences to work around. Working locally means we know what to look for before the first post goes in.

Built by Brothers.
Rooted in West Michigan Since 2013.
Fence Brothers was founded by Alec and Kyle Trierweiler in Kentwood in 2013. Their father spent more than three decades in the West Michigan lumber industry — a background that still shapes how the company selects materials and builds fences meant to withstand Michigan winters.
Alec came from finance. Kyle runs the field. Together, they cover both sides of what makes a contractor worth hiring: the business side and the build side.
WE HANDLE THE DETAILS
Three Things Most Fence Companies Leave to You
From the first call to the final post, Fence Brothers coordinates the parts of a project that most fence builders hand off or skip entirely.
Requirements vary by city. What’s allowed in Caledonia isn’t always the same as what’s allowed in East Grand Rapids or the City of Grand Rapids itself.
Common requirements across Kent and Ottawa counties:
Permit required for most permanent fences (height and placement thresholds vary by municipality)
Setback rules apply: fences typically cannot be installed directly on the property line
HOA approval required in many Byron Center, Caledonia, and Forest Hills-area subdivisions
Commercial properties may require zoning review and coordination with the general contractor or property manager
Miss Dig utility locate required before any dig installation (Michigan law)
Height restrictions near road intersections (vision clearance triangles)
Fence Brothers handles permits and Miss Dig coordination on every project. We track requirements by municipality so your fence is built right the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common Questions About Our Fencing Services, Pricing, and Process.
Which fence material holds up best in Michigan winters?
Michigan’s freeze-thaw cycles put pressure on posts and panels, so durability matters. Aluminum performs best long-term because it doesn’t absorb moisture, rot, or warp. Vinyl also performs well in winter when high-quality materials are used. Wood remains the most common choice because of its cost and flexibility, but it needs proper post depth and periodic sealing to handle the climate.
Why is cedar commonly used for wood fences?
Cedar naturally resists moisture, insects, and decay, which makes it well-suited for outdoor structures in West Michigan’s humid climate. The wood contains natural oils that slow rot and reduce warping compared with many other species. When installed correctly and sealed every few years, cedar fences can last decades while maintaining their natural appearance.
Which fence material requires the least maintenance?
Aluminum requires the least maintenance overall. Powder-coated aluminum doesn’t rust, rot, or require staining, and it typically only needs occasional washing. Vinyl also requires very little upkeep beyond cleaning. Wood fences require more attention, usually needing to be sealed or stained every few years to protect against moisture and sun exposure.
How long does each type of fence typically last?
Lifespan depends on material quality and installation. Well-built cedar fences commonly last 15–20 years or more with routine maintenance. Vinyl fencing often lasts 25–30 years because it doesn’t absorb moisture or decay. Aluminum fences can last 30 years or longer, since powder-coated metal resists corrosion and structural deterioration.
How do you choose between wood, vinyl, and aluminum fencing?
The right material depends on what matters most for your property. Wood offers the most customization and a natural look. Vinyl is popular for homeowners who want minimal maintenance. Aluminum works well for durability, visibility, and areas near water or slopes. Budget, maintenance preference, and property layout usually determine the best choice.
