BUILT FOR MICHIGAN HOMES & YARDS
Fencing Built for West Michigan’s Climate and Ground Conditions
Whether you’re dealing with sandy loam near Holland, or clay near Kentwood, your fence needs to be built to withstand our specific climate.
West Michigan ground freezes hard every winter. Posts set too shallow heave as the soil expands and contracts. That is why most fences that start leaning within a few years were installed by someone who skipped the depth math.
We evaluate post depth based on what’s actually under your yard. We also choose between dig-and-drive installation based on what’s actually under your yard. Sandy loam near Holland behaves differently from the clay-heavy ground further east toward Kentwood and Caledonia. One method isn’t right for every property.
Wood selection matters here, too. Cedar’s natural oils resist moisture and insects without chemical treatment. That makes it the right wood for Michigan’s humidity and temperature swings, from a Kentwood January to a July afternoon in your backyard.
Our family has worked in the lumber industry for over 34 years. That is how we know which wood holds up through a Michigan winter and which wood doesn’t.

WHAT WE INSTALL
Residential and Commercial.
We Don’t Specialize in Just One.
Wood fences are our bread and butter.
We install the full range across West Michigan.

Wood Fencing
Most West Michigan homeowners choose wood, and most of them choose cedar. It handles the freeze-thaw cycle well, looks natural, and gives you more design options than any other material. We build with true 2×4 rails and thicker boards than most companies use. The difference shows up in how long it holds.
Styles:
Dog-ear
Board-on-board
Shadowbox
Stockade
Split rail
White cedar
Vinyl Fencing
No painting, no staining, and very little upkeep. Vinyl holds its color through Michigan summers and winters, making it a great choice for a clean, consistent look without the maintenance.
Styles:

Aluminum Fencing
Clean lines, no rust, and it stays looking sharp without maintenance. Works well where you want a defined boundary without blocking sight lines — around a pool, along a property edge, or next to landscaping you want to show off.
Styles:
Flat top
Spear top
Curved top
Finials
Chain Link
Practical, tough, and built to last. A good choice for larger yards, dog runs, or any area where security matters more than privacy.
Styles:
Galvanized
Vinyl-coated
Slatted
Security-grade

Gate Operators
A fence without a gate is just a barrier. We install driveway gates and motorized gate operators, which most fence companies in West Michigan don’t offer. If you want controlled access, we can build it into your project from the start.
Fence Repair & Post Reset
Storm damage, post-heaving from freeze-thaw cycles, sagging gates, and rotting boards are the most common repair calls we get. We handle all of it—single panel replacements, post resets, rot repair, and gate realignment.
Many repairs are faster and less expensive than homeowners expect. If you’re not sure whether your fence needs repair or replacement, we’ll assess it honestly.

PERMITS, PROPERTY LINES, & HOA RULES
What Rules Should West Michigan Homeowners Know Before Building a Fence
Most homeowners don’t realize how much coordination goes into a fence installation before the first post goes in. Here is what Fence Brothers takes off your plate:
Permits
Most municipalities in West Michigan require a permit for fence installation. The rules vary by city, fence height, and lot type. Fence Brothers pulls the permits. You do not call the city or visit the municipal office.
Miss Dig / 811 Utility Marking
Before any post goes into the ground, Michigan law requires utility lines to be located and marked. Fence Brothers coordinates the Miss Dig utility-marking process for every job. This protects you, our crew, and your utilities.
Property Lines
Installing a fence, even a few inches over a property line, can create a dispute that is expensive to resolve. Our site evaluation includes a layout review relative to your property lines before installation begins. That step is part of the process, not an add-on.
HOA Restrictions
Neighborhoods in Ada, East Grand Rapids, Byron Center, and other parts of West Michigan often have HOA guidelines that govern fence height, materials, styles, or colors. Our consultation includes a review of any restrictions that apply to your address. We do not install a fence and leave you to find out there is a problem afterward.
Height Limits
Most Michigan municipalities cap rear-yard fences at 6 feet and front-yard fences at 4 feet. Corner lots often have additional visibility clearance rules. We cover applicable height limits at your consultation, so you are not surprised during the permit review.
Easements & Right-of-Way
Some yards include easements or right-of-way areas that can affect where a fence can be placed. We review the layout before installation so the fence is planned around those restrictions and does not create a problem later.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common Questions About Our Fencing Services, Pricing, and Process.
How much does residential fence installation cost in West Michigan?
Fence cost depends on three main factors: material, total linear footage, and ground conditions. Wood fences are typically the most flexible in price, while aluminum and vinyl cost more upfront but require less maintenance. Sloped yards, tree roots, and difficult soil can also affect installation time. The only accurate way to price a fence is a site visit and measurement.
How long should a residential fence last in Michigan?
Lifespan depends heavily on material and installation depth. A properly installed cedar fence can last 15–20 years, while vinyl and aluminum fences often last longer with minimal maintenance. The most important factor is post depth. In West Michigan, posts need to be set deep enough to prevent movement during freeze-thaw cycles.
Do I need a property survey before installing a fence?
Not always, but it depends on how clearly the property lines are defined. Many homes still have visible survey markers or existing boundary references. If the lines are unclear, a professional survey prevents disputes with neighbors and ensures the fence stays entirely on your property. Fence layout should always be confirmed before installation begins.
Should I talk to my neighbor before building a fence?
It is usually a good idea. While you are not legally required to get your neighbor’s approval for a fence on your property, discussing the project beforehand can help prevent misunderstandings. Some homeowners choose to align fences with existing structures or coordinate styles along shared property lines. Clear communication early avoids problems later.
How long does residential fence installation usually take?
Most residential fences are installed within one to three days once materials and permits are ready. Larger yards, complex layouts, or difficult ground conditions can extend the timeline slightly. The longest part of many projects is actually the preparation phase—permits, utility marking through Miss Dig, and scheduling materials before installation begins.
